As you may well have seen, the new Quickr and Connections products do overlap in some areas, most notably in that they both offer blogging platforms and areas for content managent (team spaces in Quickr, activities in Connections). However, they are definitely complementary...
This is the clearest summary from IBM I have seen thus far:
Lotus Connections and Lotus Quickr are complementary offerings designed to solve different needs that many companies face. When used together they provide companies with unique value to address their collaboration requirements that span from formal, role-based team workspaces to informal community-driven social networks.
is social software that empowers you to be more effective and innovative by enabling you to build dynamic professional networks & communities with your coworkers, partners and customers. It is designed to help you to find subject matter experts & information, create deliverables, and exchange information / knowledge across your networks.
is collaborative content software to help you to easily share your published content across your organization & collaborate with your extended teams. It also provides more formal secure, role-based team workspaces to facilitate communication and collaboration within the team. It includes extensible components that can be customized and combined into collaborative applications.
Quickr is really focused on the delivery of content libraries, team workplaces, wikis and team blogs, Connections on profiles, community management, social bookmarking, activities and enterprise blog management. Got that... ;-)
