It seems to be that the quality and timeliness of IBM's Infocenter updates is improving with every release.  The Lotus Quickr infocenter has already been updated for the 8.1.1 release, and here we have a complete list of what's changed:

What's new in version 8.1.1

IBM Lotus Quickr 8.1.1 is an update to the base code for Lotus Quickr services for IBM WebSphere Portal only. Lotus Quickr 8.1 must be installed prior to installing the Lotus Quickr 8.1.1 updates. In addition, updates to the Lotus Quickr connectors are available for download for customers who have Lotus Quickr Services for IBM Lotus Domino and for customers with Enterprise Content Management (ECM) software.

ECM Integration

   Lotus Quickr 8.1.1 introduces the following ECM services for integrating Lotus Quickr document collaboration capabilities with the comprehensive infrastructure of ECM systems:

       * IBM FileNet Services for Lotus Quickr

       * IBM Content Manager Services for Lotus Quickr

   This integration helps you manage and control content created by shared workgroups across your organization. Using these services, you can manage content to address your archiving and regulatory requirements and corporate governance mandates, as well as integrate the content into your business process.

Lotus Quickr integrated with IBM Lotus Connections

   Better integration of Lotus Quickr and Lotus Connections that enables a user in a Lotus Connections activity to publish content to a Lotus Quickr library, create a Lotus Quickr place or wiki in a Connections community, and lets users of Lotus Quickr take advantage of the features of the Connections Profile business card.

Connectors

   Connector updates include the following:

       * You can use connectors for a consolidated view of content in places and in your ECM repository. Lotus Quickr connectors can access and store documents directly into your ECM repositories. Refer to Connecting to an ECM library from a Lotus connector for more information.

       * The connectors can be used directly with your ECM repository without installing Lotus Quickr. A separate installation program is available when installing only the connectors and not the Lotus Quickr server.

       * Lotus Quickr connector for Microsoft Outlook including compatibility with Microsoft Outlook edition 2007 features.
       * The latest version of connectors will be available to users of Lotus Quickr Services for IBM Lotus Domino, on FixCentral.

New table formatting features in rich text editor

   Easily format tables in the rich text areas in libraries, blogs, wikis, comments, forums, and lists, using the following new table formatting features:

       * Cell width, height, spacing, padding, text alignment, and table border

       * Table header options

       * Background and border colors for tables

       * Table templates

New APIs added to the Lotus Quickr wiki.

   New APIs that provide you with the following capabilities:

       * Manipulate and apply document types

       * Manipulate property sheets

       * Edit and retrieve extended metadata

       * Make post custom queries

       * ATOM publishing and syndication of blog and wiki content

       * Replicate document library content

Enable notifications on a place

   Task notification sends an email to associated users when a task is created, updated, or deleted. Workflow notification send an email when a document is submitted for approval, approved, or rejected.

View members of a place

   While in a place, click View Members to see a list of the members of the place you are currently visiting. From this view, you can send e-mails to one or more place members, change how the members are displayed to quickly locate a specific member, and start a chat with place members.

Open places in separate browsers

   You can configure the site to open places in separate browsers. Refer to Opening a place in a separate browser.
The key details are obviously the first two points listed.  There is now excellent integration with FileNet and Content Manger to allow surfacing of enterprise content/document management information through Quickr places.  Secondly, Quickr 8.1.1 is closely integrated with Connections 2.0.1 to allow Quickr places to be a central part of Connections communities (thus letting community members store and share files - incredibly important) and for the Connections business cards to be displayed inside Quickr.

If you already have Quickr Services for Portal (the J2EE version), then I would think you would do well to take a look at 8.1.1 ASAP.  If you're a Quickr Services for Domino customer, then you might want to look at the features above and consider whether you install a J2EE Quickr server alongside your existing Domino Quickr infrastructure, particularly if you have Lotus Connections and need the integration available in the new release.

Either way, the new Quickr Connector that supports Outlook 2007 should be on your radar.

1) quickr Domino or J2EE
Peter Smith 12/13/2008 7:56:04

Do you think it really is crunch time for Domino Quickr shops to move to J2EE? Is the filenet & connections integration not going to happen on Domino in the next release? Is Quickr on Domino the new Dom.doc?

If we are at this watershed I think a position statement from IBM would be welcome to clarify the roadmap for the 2 Quickr streams.

2) I think both is the way to go...
Stuart McIntyre 12/13/2008 8:05:44

Great questions, Peter.

The Connections functionality is definitely coming in a later Quickr/Domino release, and I believe that there are plans for ECM integration there too, but it is interesting that IBM has chosen to do the integration in the J2EE release first both times.

Either it is easier there (similar work has been done before in other WAS-based products) or else IBM feels that more Quickr/J2EE customer want/need that functionality.

However, I still see that there are many advantages for the Domino version - it is MUCH easier to create and customise placetypes there for instance.

So for me personally, I'd start to look at putting both Quickr platforms in, and using the most appropriate one for each need. Unfortunately this will be too costly and difficult to manage for some smaller customers, so there they will need to do a careful analysis of which is best for them.

3) questions for lotusphere
Peter Smith 12/13/2008 8:39:32

Even for large customers putting 2 Quickr infrastructures in to allow for differing needs will not sit well. For a new customer to Quickr they need to be confident of the road map for that platform before they invest.

If IBM are equally committed to both platforms for Quickr then they should release a statement when they make a release for one side on when the other will catch up.

As we both know from experience, when we sit and dicuss Quickr with customers they're already asking which version to use, this just makes it trickier to advise on the validity of Domino (which is where the product grew from).

If there is going to be a marked difference in functionality I think a rename is in order. Will Quickr J2EE become the Quickr Advanced that appeared on initial Quickr road maps, with Domino as an entry level product?

It is very useful that Lotusphere is just around the corner, an opportunity to ask all these questions and gauge the responses.

4) Deployment options
Marc Pagnier 12/15/2008 16:20:38

Peter and Stuart, Let me first respond to the question whether it is crunch time for Domino Quickr shops to move to J2EE. Well, let me be clear: this is NOT the intent and message to push customers away from Domino to J2EE. The Domino services option is as strategic as ever. The focus right now is on Lotus Quickr 8.1.1, a release running on J2EE services but if you step back, you may notice that we have been delivering - and currently planning to deliver - Lotus Quickr as staggered releases. For example, the focus in 2008 was first on Domino services (Lotus Quickr 8.1) and then on J2EE services (Lotus Quickr 8.1.1). The alternation will continue in 2009 as this allows the IBM team to optimize efforts and bring capabilities more quickly to the market. The prioritization will also be driven by the speed of implementation and technical considerations: keep in mind that IBM FileNet is running as a J2EE service so there is already a technology alignment for ECM integration with the J2EE services. Another important point to consider is that the connectors are also delivered with each release, and for both deployment options. For example, users of a Quickr Domino application will now be able to access ECM content in their connectors directly without having to install a J2EE server. So this release is also valuable for Domino customers.

Focus for Lotus Quickr is not on full feature parity between the different deployment options, but the intent is to provide functional enhancements for both deployment options. I cannot speak to the details publicly as the plan is not closed, and we need to keep some secrets for Lotusphere :), but you can expect to see some of these capabilities on the Domino services in 2009.

5) Thanks Marc

Thanks Marc, a great response to the questions raised here.

Can't wait for Lotusphere now to hear those secrets ;-)
